Editor's notes:

Colin Macdonald did an enormous amount of work producing the eight-volume set of his Dictionary of Canadian Artists. Much of it is based on original information and correspondence with the artists themselves. It is unfortunate that he never completed listing artists from Smith to Z, but instead kept going back to revise and expand earlier Volumes, for example Volume 1 reached its 5th Edition. However, that doesn't diminish the scope of his accomplishment.

The National Gallery of Canada acquired the rights to the Dictionary, and began to scan pages and post them on their website ARTISTS IN CANADA. However, somebody complained that the pages are not bilingual, and as a result the images were deleted from the website. Instead, a note is posted advising researchers that a scan is available upon request. The political correctness makes no sense in this case.

Although I have been referencing "M" into BC ARTISTS for about fifteen years, almost exclusively into solo artist biographical files, the concept of going through every volume to look for, identify, mark, and reference all "BC artists" into my project was too daunting, with eight volumes and over 3,600 pages of information to review. Finally, during a two-week vacation in 2016, I broke down and did seven volumes of it (lacking the elusive Volume 8.1). In May 2018 I acquired the final Volume 8.1, Safdie, Sylvia to Smith, Jori, from an on-line auction, and quickly added it to the original list.

A total of 714 artists "qualified" as BC artists and were cross-referenced. Of these, 127 were not previously listed in BC ARTISTS. It was a very useful exercise, as a number of obscure BC artists have information listed in Macdonald's Dictionary that might otherwise go unnoticed by researchers.

NOTE: artists listed are only those artists with BC references.
