November 27 1896 - January 27 1970

Art Directors Guild of Vancouver
Federation of Canadian Artists (Founding Member 1941)
B.C. Society of Fine Arts (President 1948 - 1950)

Paul Rand was born Otto Schellenberger in Bonn, Germany in 1896. He attended art school at Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany for a year. He arrived in Canada in 1912 with "two hundred dollars in his pocket" according to an article in The Beaver. He was living in Alberta at the outbreak of World War One, and as an enemy alien he was interned until the end of the war. He arrived in Vancouver in 1926, where he took night lessons at the Art School for a number of years.

He taught at the A.O.T.S. Polytechnic School (As One That Serves) at 138 E. Cordova St. in the mid-1930s, until the school was closed by John Kyle in 1937. He was Art Director at the Sun Printing Company for seventeen years, and then Art Director at Evergreen Press until his retirement in 1965.

He showed work in the B.C. Artists Christmas exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 1933. He won a Bronze medal for watercolours at the Gallery in 1937, and honourable mentions in 1935 and 1936.

He had work in the British Dominions Travelling Exhibition, under the auspices of the Carnegie Foundation. The exhibition travelled through Canada, and to South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and Hawaii.

In 1941 he changed his name from Schellenberger to Rand.

He exhibited his work in the B.C. Artists annual exhibitions in 1932, 1933, 1934, 1935, and 1939 (as Otto Schellenberger), and in 1941, 1942, 1944, 1945, 1947, 1948, and 1950 as Paul Rand.

He exhibited in the 1945 British Columbia At Work exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Paul Rand was on a list titled "Leading Vancouver Artists," provided to the Labour Arts Guild on April 10, 1946 by the Vancouver Art Gallery to assist in the Guild's call for entries to the second annual B.C. At Work exhibition.

He also exhibited with the B.C. Society of Fine Arts in their annual exhibitions in 1936, 1937, 1939, and 1940 (as Otto Schellenberger), and in 1941, 1942, 1943, from 1944 to 1948, 1949, from 1950 to 1952, 1954, from 1960 to 1962, and in 1967.

He died in Vancouver in 1970 at the age of seventy-three.
