He enlisted in the R.C.A.F., serving as a navigator in the Bomber Command. Downed over France in 1943, he avoided capture and made his way to Switzerland, where he studied art. When the Allies invaded Europe he was able to rejoin his unit, and was discharged in 1945.

He returned to Vancouver, and studied at the Vancouver School of Art, graduating with honours in 1948. He followed this with teacher training at the Provincial Normal School in Vancouver, graduating with honours in 1949. He taught art for the Vancouver School Board for ten years, and instructed evening classes at the Vancouver School of Art from 1949 - 1955.

He exhibited in the 1945 British Columbia At Work exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

He exhibited in the B.C. Artists annual exhibitions at the Vancouver Art Gallery for a number of years. His 1947 entry form stated that he was living in Vancouver.

He submitted four conte drawings to the 1949 B.C. Graphic exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery, one of them "did not come in" and two were selected for the exhibition.

He exhibited with the B.C. Society of Fine Arts from 1949 to 1952, 1954 to 1958, 1960, and 1967.

He won an Emily Carr Scholarship in 1953, and spent a year studying in London, England.
