Harry Ernest Jones

August 31 1892 - February 16 1952

Island Arts and Crafts Society
Alberta Society of Artists (Associate Member)

Harry E. Jones was born in Bracknell, Berkshire, England in 1892. He served in World War One in the infantry and the air corps. He came to Canada in 1910, moving to Edmonton where he studied under A.C. Leighton.

He exhibited artwork with the Island Arts and Crafts Society in 1930 in Victoria. He later exhibited in the B.C. Artists exhibitions at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 1940, 1946 to 1949, and 1951. He exhibited two sketches with the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1939.

He was a Flight Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War Two, serving as a recruiter. He had a solo exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 1941.

Jones died in Vancouver in 1954 at the age of 61, according to B.C. Vital Statistics on-line. There were, however, two Harry Ernest Jones listed as passing away, plus one Harry Ernest Jones marrying Gwendoline Rippingale in Victoria in 1929. Cross-referencing the 1892 birth date narrowed down the first conflict, but the 1929 marriage could have been to either Jones as far as the researcher knows now.
