Maud(e) de Kirkby Paget (nee Lumb)
(m Arthur E.M. Paget)

May 19 1874 - September 28 1967

Island Arts and Crafts Society
Art Gallery of Greater Victoria

Maud de Kirkby Paget was born in Preneth, England, and lived most of her life in Victoria, moving there by 1920. She studied commerical art and was an artist for the Hudson's Bay Company in Winnipeg, and for Spencer's Department store in Vancouver.

She showed work in the B.C. Artists Christmas exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 1933 and 1934.

In Victoria she became known for her miniatures, and exhibited in at least 2 jury shows at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. She received commissions for her miniatures until eye strain forced her to turn to portrait and landscape work.

A large number of her watercolours came up for auction in Vancouver around 1998, selling for $100.00 each on average. The Editor purchased one for $10.00 that he liked but was unsigned, although it turned out to be signed upper left with the signature obscured by the matte (see below).
