Gerald Hall Tyler

July 25 1897 - November 3 1983

Gerald Hall Tyler was born in Birmingham, England in 1897. He was a pupil of W.F. Tyler in Birmingham. He came to Canada in 1907, and to Vancouver in 1927. He was a banker, employed by the Royal Bank of Canada. He was also an artist and restorer, specializing in "the chemistry of painting, and restoration work" (WWNA). He was "largely self-taught".

He taught for a while at the Canadian Institute of Associated Arts in Vancouver.

He exhibited in the B.C. Artists exhibitions at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 1934, 1937 to 1939, 1942, 1945, and 1951.

He showed one painting in the 1935 Spring Exhibition of the Art Association of Montreal.

He was on a list titled "Leading Vancouver Artists," provided to the Labour Arts Guild on April 10, 1946 by the Vancouver Art Gallery to assist in the Guild's call for entries to the second annual B.C. At Work exhibition.

In 1946 he was also appointed Curator of the Vancouver Art Gallery, an interim position he held until 1948.

He exhibited with the B.C. Society of Fine Arts in many of their annual exhibitions, from 1936 to 1955 including 1942, 1943, and 1949, also 1957, 1959 to 1961, and 1967.

Tyler died in Vancouver in 1983 at the age of 86.
