The major effort for the first four months this year was to complete transcription of
the annual B.C. Artists' and
B.C. Society of Fine Arts exhibitions up to 1950, and the
creation or updating of all related artist biographies. After
18 years this has finally been completed, every artist
on the pre-1950 list of artists now
has a biography file. That was a lot of work. Of course, in British Columbia there is always another mountain to climb. A recent donation to me of a large collection of B.C. Artists' and BCSFA exhibition catalogues has prompted me to carry on with extending both series of exhibitions from 1950 up to the date at which the exhibitions ceased, in 1967 and 1968. Rather than transcribing and linking all information to artist biographies, I am simply scanning and linking the catalogues as images. This is another "work in progress" ... seven of the post-1950 B.C. Artists' exhibition catalogues are now completely scanned and linked. Interestingly, I've been checking the post-1950 catalogues for artist references as I post the images, and have found a few artists who weren't noted in one exhibition or another, and also a few artists who weren't noted (yet) in any exhibition catalogue. By this, I mean they weren't noted in the art gallery Library's card index to artists in these exhibitions that was compiled many years ago. This card index was the source of my first artist index, and was comprehensive and a lot of work ... just a few errors and omissions. In addition, that index didn't note any artist's place of residence, so I am adding that information where necessary. Information from more than 300 BC Vital Statistics documents for births, marriages, and deaths has been added. A collection of post-1950 catalogues and publications is still being referenced, 54 have been added so far this year. Another 64 artist monographs have been listed this year as well. The Greater Vancouver Art Galleries page has been significantly expanded to include 500+ galleries and 1,200+ exhibition listings. Cross referencing the exhibitions to the artist A - Z index and to artist biographies is in progress, and a number of "new" artists will be listed.
