Marjorie Smyly was born in Lismore, New South Wales, Australia. Both of her parents were Australian. After arriving in BC she exhibited work in a number of the B.C. Artists annuals at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Entry forms indicated that she was living in North Vancouver, and had been in British Columbia since 1930.

The brief entry in Who's Who in Northwest Art noted that she was living in West Vancouver at Nelson Avenue and 23rd Street in 1941.

Her husband Frederick Hamilton Smyly died in Victoria on July 23, 1972, at the age of 78, according to B.C. Vital Statistics on-line. Smyly died in a care home in Victoria, occupation noted as artist.
