Richard Geoffrey Bunyard

August 19 1883 - June 6 1973

B.C. Society of Fine Arts (Member 1938 - 1967)
(Elected Life Member 1963)

Richard G. Bunyard was born in Kent, England. He came to Canada in 1900, and moved to British Columbia in 1930, where he worked as an Architect for thirty years.

He married Gertrude Harriet Blanchard at Oak Bay, Vancouver Island, on March 23, 1929, according to B.C. Vital Statistics on-line. His wife died in North Saanich on December 12, 1966, at the age of 69. Bunyard died in North Saanich on June 6, 1973 at the age of 89.

His middle initial is variously given as C, D, and G, correctly the latter.

He was a long-time member of the B.C. Society of Fine Arts, first listed as a member in the 1938 annual exhibition catalogue. He was elected Life Member of the Society on May 16 1963, at the same time as Fred Amess and B.C. Binning. It is curious that he could be elected to such a status in 1963, yet twenty years later the Printmaking in British Columbia catalogue noted that "no biographical data about this artist has been found." This is perhaps related to the demise of the Society in 1967, only four years after Bunyard was elected as a Life Member. His work was shown in their final 1967 annual exhibition.

"R.G. Bunyard's "Yale, B.C.," is an exceptionally fine painting of the Interior. Well defined and yet delicate in structure, the old houses against the sombre mountains give the true character of the locality with marked success."
