Presents the

FIRST
INTERNATIONAL VANCOUVER SALON
OF PICTORIAL PHOTOGRAPHY

His Honour Lieutenant-Governor E.W. Hamber and Mrs. Hamber, His Worship Mayor Lyle Telford and Mrs. Telford have graciously extended their patronage. The Salon will be formally opened by His Worship the Mayor at 8 p.m., June 4, 1940.

June 4th - 23rd (incl.) 1940

It is with a deep sense of gratitude and pleasure that the Vancouver Photographic Society presents the First International Vancouver Salon of Pictorial Photography. Gratitude for the unselfish co-operation of all who actively assisted with the many details of organization, and pleasure at the very high standard of prints submitted.

The truly international aspect of the Salon is borne out by the submission of prints from 17 different countries, many of which were from some of the world's most famous photographers.

A very high standard of selection was set by the jury. The Salon is therefore representative of the best in present-day photography, and although the proportion of prints accepted may appear to be high this is considered to be justified. Many excellent prints just failed to received the approval of the judges by one vote.

Prints were judged individually under Salon lighting, the voting being recorded electrically, and it was therefore quite impartial. Out of a total of 1,026 prints received from 272 exhibitors, 326 prints from 176 exhibitors were accepted for hanging.

To all who assisted in the success of the Salon, to the contributing artists, to the Jury of Selection who gave so willingly of their time and experience, and to the Officers of the Vancouver Art Gallery for their valuable co-operation, we tender our most grateful thanks.

             THE VANCOUVER PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY.
