Elizabeth Charlton was born in Victoria. Her father Thomas C. Nuttal was born in Newfoundland, her mother Elizabeth S. Tate-Stoate was born in Bristol, England.

She married twice, first to a Mr. Hopkins from whom she was later divorced. She married Arthur Leslie Charlton in Victoria on September 2 1933 at the age of 50. Her occupation was noted as "housewife" residing at 2998 Colquitz Avenue, Victoria. She pre-deceased her husband, who passed away in Victoria in 1965 at the age of 93, his occupation noted as "never worked."

She exhibited artwork with the Island Arts and Crafts Society from 1932 to 1941, exhibiting as E.M. Hopkins in 1932.

She had work in the B.C. Artists exhibitions at the Vancouver Art Gallery from 1939 to 1948. She was living in Victoria.

B.C. Vital Statistics on-line records that Elizabeth Mary Charlton died in Victoria on October 23 1957 at the age of 77.
