Johnston Fair was born in Ireland. He came to Canada c1896, and moved to Vancouver c1936. He worked during World War Two as a painter at Burrard Shipyards.

Fair exhibited work at the Vancouver Art Gallery in the 1945 B.C. Artists annual exhibition. The artist was living in Vancouver at #14 West 13th Avenue.

Fair died in Vancouver in 1950 at the age of 74, predeceased by his wife Sarah McCrindle.
