BRITISH COLUMBIA ARTISTS

LIST OF ARTISTS:
ISLAND ARTS & CRAFTS CLUB
5th ANNUAL EXHIBITION

November 19 - 21, 1914, Alexandra Club, Victoria

The exhibition catalogue lists 378 works in the show, one of the largest art exhibitions in BC history, just as World War One broke out. The list below gives artist names alphabetically by last name. Numbers indicate title numbers in the catalogue. There are three sections in the catalogue: Water Colours, Oil Paintings, and The Crafts. The Water Colours are numbered 1 through 144, and the oil paintings 145 through 229. "The Crafts" are numbered 1 through 149. To prevent duplication of numbers the latter are preceded with "c" for "crafts."

The IACS LIST OF EXHIBITORS nominally includes all artists in the 1914 exhibition. However, when I went through the exhibition catalogue myself and listed every artist in it, I discovered that all of the artist who exhibited ONLY in "The Crafts" section were not included on the list. Those who exhibited a painting plus crafts were included. The additional artists are noted as follows:
Not on exhibitors list, but previously listed in BC Artists:
         Janet S. Pride
Not on exhibitors list, and not previously listed in BC Artists:
         Alleyne, C.M. (Miss)
         Ashley, T.C.
         Beckton, Gladys M.
         Brown, F.F.
         Chadwick, K.M.
         Crease, Arthur (Mrs.)
         Du Tot, D. (Mr.)
Gorle, Ethel Agnes (Mrs. F.T. Gorle)
         Madame Grohe
         Miss Hatton
         Miss M. Higgins
         Miss D. Kershaw
         Muir, Arthur (Mrs.)
         Mrs. Nicholls
         Nicholson, N.M.
         Oldfield, Isabel (Miss)
         Thompson, H.
         Waddington, Frederick
         Wakefield, E.J.
         Warde, Thomas H.
         Miss Williams
         Miss R. Willis
         Wilson, Ridgway
         Young, A.M. (Miss)

Editor's note: I was uncertain about how to reference this catalogue. Transcribing it completely, with links to all artist biographies, would take weeks. A few years ago I would have done that for AAEV, but the new BCA format is more of a finding aid to information rather than the information itself. So, I created an index of artists in the show, which has its own advantages. It's now easy to count how many artists were represented, how many artworks each of them displayed, and what type of artwork they created. The index also allows for error-checking in the original catalogue, where names are frequently spelled differently, expanded or contracted, and numerous artworks misnumbered. Adding the hyperlink for this catalogue into the BC Artists A to Z index files also provided more cross-checking, and name corrections and additions.
