Gassy Jack Statue

This photograph is in memory of the now destroyed statue of Gassy Jack Deighton by Vern Simpson (q.v.). For the last 50 years the statue stood peacefully at this intersection, overlooking the neighbourhood that Gassy Jack helped create. On February 14 2022 the statue was destroyed by a mob of angry indigenous people who were having a "march for respect" yet came prepared for gross vandalism. They toppled, smashed, and covered the statue in red paint while the VPD stood by watching. Their behavior deserves no respect.

This photograph was taken four days later, by which time the scene had been cleaned up, presumably at taxpayer expense. A brass plaque modeled by Charles Marega in 1925 to commemorate Maple Tree Square had been relocated to the base of this statue some years ago. The mortar covering part of the upstand shows where it used to be. Hopefully the City of Vancouver got it, and not one of the vandals. RIP Gassy Jack. Photo Gary Sim.
