BRITISH COLUMBIA ARTISTS

Letterpress work by Robert R. Reid, 1958 - 1959

These are samples of Reid's work in Vancouver in the 1950s. The catalogue for 7 West Coast Painters was designed by Takao Tanabe, and printed by Reid. The responsibility for font selections was not noted. This copy is from the former collection of Jack Shadbolt, whose signature is at top right. Reid also designed, typeset, and printed the British Columbia Library Quarterly. The colour linocut print on the front cover is attributed to Geoffrey Ross, of the art school, but I suspect that this may be an error for Geoffrey Rees. Bob kindly signed both publications for me when I saw him at the Alcuin Wayzgoose in 2019. He looked through them, and was pleased to be reminded of the large wooden letters being used. He said that they let him lay out the Quarterly as he wished. J.M.Dent & Sons were an important local publisher, who printed a number of books by R.S. Sherman. The author of the Aqualung series, Frederick Falkner, was also an exhibiting artist.
