Joe Fortes Fountain, 1927. Photos G. Sim

Charles Marega designed this fountain to commemorate well-known lifeguard Joe Fortes, who died in 1922. The fountain was funded by the citizens and children of Vancouver in co-operation with the Kiwanis Club of Vancouver. The fountain was designed to be "low enough for the smallest child." The fountain is located in Alexandra Park, facing Beach Avenue. It is made from bronze and granite (plus mosaic tiles and plumbing). There is a carved inscription on the back of the granite slab, see photo caption below.

"This fountain, erected by the citizens and children, co-operating with the Kiwanis Club of Vancouver commemorates the life and deeds of Joe Fortes, for many years guardian of this beach. Little children loved him. A.D. 1927."
