Joan Thompson

King George High School


Joan Thompson was born in Vancouver. In 1942 she was attending King George High School, and submitted artwork to poster design competitions. She won the "first ever" Vancouver Sun monthly magazine poster contest. She also won first prize (Junior) for a poster competition held by the United Commercial Travellers association.

In 1942 Thompson was living at suite 12 - 1091 Broughton Street, Gainsborough Place, in Vancouver's West End. Her father, Maurice A. Thompson, was listed in the City Directories as a Station Master for the Canadian Pacific Railway. Also living at that address was Doris, Maurice's wife, and Constance B. Thompson, noted as a "tel opr" for the C.P.R.

Her art teachers at King George were noted as Bernice E. Barton, and Mrs. R. Poisson.
