This image is a partial screen capture of a spreadsheet that I put together for my
2019 lecture on early BC artists at the Ferry Building Gallery, West Vancouver. I
went through the City Directories from the mid-1880's through to 1920, and listed
every artist that I could find who advertised in the directories. This was quite a
bit of work, as there was more than one series of publications (Wrigley's and
Henderson's, for example) and various ways of listing the artists in each series.
I decided to do a visual graphic to represent the information. Each artist has one
line, yellow boxes indicate men who advertised in a given year, and turqoise boxes
indicate women who advertised in a given year. It was interesting to see how few
artists advertised at all, and particularly during World War One from 1914 to 1918.
