Society of Canadian Artists

1867 - ?

The Society of Canadian Artists was founded in 1867 by John Bell-Smith, a portrait painter, shortly after his arrival from England. Bell-Smith was the first President of the society.

Founding members of the group were W.L. Fraser, Otto R. Jacobi, Henry Sandham, A. Vogt, and Bell-Smith's son Frederick Marlett Bell-Smith.

The group only lasted three or four years, according to Macdonald.

NOTE: another group with this name was founded afterwards.
