Robert King Courtney was born in New Westminster. His father was from Ireland, his mother from Alberta.

He exhibited artwork in the 1948 annual B.C. Artists exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery. He was living in New Westminster at the time.

He died in New Westminster in 1996 at the age of 74. BCVS noted his occupation as "auto accessory" and he was survived by his widow Marie McDonald.
