The National Gallery of Canada maintains an index of references to the location of biographical files for more than 45,000 Canadian artists. The Gallery has posted this index on their website at the following address:

The National Gallery acquired the rights to Macdonald's Biographical Dictionary of Canadian Artists, and has been processing the information in order to make it available on-line as part of Artists in Canada. Unfortunately, the National Gallery is mandated to publish everything in both English and French. The resources necessary to translate the eight volumes of Macdonald's Dictionary were not available, and as a result the material that had been posted was taken off the website, and a note added that the material would be available upon request.
