Samuel Maclure design - 3689 Selkirk, Vancouver

Maclure-designed mansion at 3689 Selkirk

This large house was designed by Samuel Maclure (Maclure & Fox Architects), and was built around 1913-1914, touted as "the most expensive house in Vancouver." It was built for lawyer and businessman A.E. Tulk, who died quite young. It was subsequently owned by well-known people, but later became the Cenacle Convent, Retreat House for Women. The house and its "carriage house" have dozens of bedrooms, 12 fireplaces, 2 libraries, among other things. This photograph came from the Vancouver Province collection of news photographs. There is an interesting amount of information on the back of the 8 x 10 black & white picture.
